White Oak Natural Resource Services is a trusted source of assistance to forest owners. It provides scientifically sound information, and management options for sustainable and healthy forests. Long-term relationships are important, and we are solid members of the woodland community dedicated to sustainable, working forests. Our employees enjoy working together to improve the health of forests and value to forest owners.

Who We Are

White Oak Natural Resource Service (WONRS) is a forest management consulting company formed in 1997 by Tom and Ken Nygren with the principal focus to manage the family's forest land with an eye to branching out to providing assistance to others in the future. In 2010, the opportunity to become Technical Service Providers for the Natural Resource Conservation Service in forestry provided the change to begin working with landowners throughout Northwest Oregon writing forest stewardship plans. Over time, the number of landowners steadily increased each year and the WONRS becan to include other services for landowners.

What We Do

As it has grown, WONRS expanded its work focus to include forest habitat restoration, riparian rehabilitation, afforestation, timber cruising and appraisals, timber trespass assessment, pre-commercial thinning, re-forestation, and vegetation management. It continues to provide quality timber management services under the Bell MAP contract and direct to landowners, but its expanding client base now includes governmental agencies such as Clean Water Services, Metro, and local Soil and water Conservation Districts.

Partner

Tom Nygren

Tom Nygren’s experience in forestry dates back over 60 years. His education includes a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Michigan Tech University, and a Master of Forestry from Yale University. Tom worked for the U.S. Forest Service for over 35 years, on National Forests in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Idaho, in positions including Forester, District Ranger, and Multiple Use Coordinator Staff Leader. Additional experience in the Regional Offices of the Forest Service in Montana and Oregon focused on land management planning and environmental assessment. Since retiring in 1997 as Staff Director of Strategic Planning in Oregon and Washington, Tom has been focused on working with small woodland owners, primarily in helping them prepare management plans.

Tom Nygren’s love for the outdoors, and passion for forests in particular, have led him to enjoy activities such as hunting, hiking, and camping. Now that he owns some forest land of his own, he enjoys working to improve forest health and productivity of those lands – especially when he can involve grandchildren in that pursuit.

Ken Nygren

Ken Nygren brings a background in Forestry including a degree in forestry from the University of Idaho, where he gained experience working on a student logging crew. He worked for five years as a pole buyer, as well as working for the forest service doing sale prep. Before retiring from the Army in 2014, Ken managed training centers and the training land in Oregon for three years. He also spent seven years working as an Emergency Management Coordinator for Yamhill County before becoming a forestry consultant for the past eight years.

Ken enjoys hunting, camping and hiking while spending time in the outdoors. He also enjoys traveling when the opportunity arises as well as reading books. Ken has always considered his work in forestry as one of his favorite hobbies.

Forester

Kevin Young

Kevin Young has background working with the Forest Service, Forestry Consultants, and running his own Forestry Consulting Business. He has been working in the forestry industry for many years. He has experience working with all aspects of timber inventory and cruising such as planning, cruising and final analysis. Kevin has also worked in Timber Sales, gaining experience with layout, boundary and timber marking, road layout, boundary traversing by GPS or chain and compass, sales administration, post-sale analysis, and GIS mapping. He has worked with all aspects of forestry silviculture including reforestation, site restoration, long term planning of timber stands (intermediate treatments, insect and disease control, and rotation age planning).

Kevin’s hobbies include spending time outdoors, cooking and enjoying time spent with his family and dog.

Forestry Technician 1/ Forestry Intern

Chris Machado

After receiving a B.S. in Physics, Chris joined the Nevada Conservation Corps working and leading conservation projects throughout the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada. Upon completion of three Americorps service terms, he joined a tree service company in Reno, Nevada where he solidified his love of working with trees. Currently Chris is working towards a degree in Forestry.

Chris’s hobbies include hiking and exploring new places, spending time enjoying fantasy and sci-fi literature, playing the guitar and mandolin, as well as board or video games.

Office Manager

Darcy Davis

Darcy Davis brings 35 years of experience as an office manager to White Oak Natural Resource Services. She brings contributions from being a small woodlands owner, coach, event planner and records keeper. This has allowed her to be able to offer a variety of experience and background to the business.

Darcy’s hobbies include spending time outdoors with her family and photography. Her event planning and photography are both passions she shares with her family and the community around her.
